This year, CHEM Trust will be hosting a fringe event at the Liberal Democrat Party Conference in partnership with the Green Liberal Democrats: ‘Turning over a green leaf: how closer UK-EU collaboration would benefit the environment’ will focus on what the changing relationship between the UK and the EU could offer in terms of better environmental protection.

Focus of the event:
Despite promises to maintain and strengthen environmental protections post-Brexit, the UK has fallen behind the EU in many areas, harming public health and environmental quality.
Meanwhile, not a single river, lake or estuary in England meets legal standards for chemical pollution and rivers in the UK have some of the highest levels recorded globally of ‘forever chemicals’ PFAS.
What are the Liberal Democrat’s plans for the UK’s future relationship with the EU? What benefits could this bring for our shared environment, as well as for trade and security? What are the opportunities presented by the UK-EU reset and what are the challenges?
Our speakers include Baroness Grender, Defra spokesperson in the House of Lords, Emma Knaggs from the European Movement, and CHEM Trust’s Executive Director Dr Michael Warhurst. Chairing our event will be Keith Melton, Vice-Chair of the Green Liberal Democrats.
