France to ban plastic packaging on fruit and vegetables by January 2022

22 Apr 2021

France has announced that it will ban the sale of unprocessed fruits and vegetables packaged in plastic from the 1st of January 2022.

January 2022 will also see the use of stickers on individual fruits and vegetables being banned, unless they have been made from paper or compostable materials. The rules will apply to all produce, including that from major suppliers like Spain and The Netherlands.

This is encouraging news for human health and the environment – in addition to physical plastic pollution, plastic can also leech chemicals which can be hazardous to health and the environment. A large number of chemicals are used in the production of plastic materials, including a wide range of additives, for examples ones to soften plastic.
