New tests by Consumer Reports (CR) found PFAS in almost all of the infant formulas tested.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a family of over 10,000 highly persistent chemicals. They are often given the nickname the ‘forever chemicals’, because they do not break down easily in the environment.

Exposure to some PFAS has been linked to numerous adverse health impacts, such as the promotion of certain cancers, disruption of the immune system and reduced fertility.

The US investigation was conducted as part of CR’s Toxic-Free Kid’s Food campaign and tested 41 powdered infant formulas, including popular store brands, new startups, and imported brands.

PFAS were found in the majority of formula samples, and PFOS was detected in some. PFOS, which is part of the PFAS family of chemicals, has been classified by the World Health Organisation as a possible carcinogen. The US has phased out the manufacturing of PFOS, however it can still be found in the US due to its extreme persistence and presence in imported products.

Bisphenol A (BPA) was also found in one of the formulas tested. Exposure to BPA has been linked to various health impacts such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and hormonal cancers such as breast and prostate.

Children are more susceptible to adverse health effects from these chemicals, partly because they are still developing.

After the results were released, the US.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Operation Stork Speed, which aims to ensure ‘safe, reliable, and nutritious infant formula for American families’.
