Our work – UK, EU and global

CHEM Trust works at UK, EU and global levels.

  • Our work in the UK.
  • Our work in the EU.
  • Our global work.

Our work in the UK

CHEM Trust participates in the UK Chemicals Stakeholder Forum (UKCSF), which advises the UK government on chemical management and related issues. It has an independent chair, and representatives of different stakeholder groups, including industry, NGOs and retailers.

We have meetings with other Government departments and agencies, including the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Department of Health and Social Care. Many of these meetings are jointly attended with other UK NGOs.

CHEM Trust is an Accredited Stakeholder in UK REACH, with regular status.

We also work with UK MPs and Peers, and the Devolved nations and respond to UK Government consultations and contribute to UK Parliamentary inquiries.

Working with other UK-based organisations

We collaborate with a range of other organisations in the UK. For example, we coordinate a group of public health and environment NGOs working on chemical pollution in the UK, including Breast Cancer UK (BCUK), Fidra (a Scottish NGO), Women’s Environmental Network  (WEN), the Cancer Prevention & Education Society (CPES), and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS).

We are also active members of Wildlife and Countryside Link, and are supporters of Unchecked UK.

Our work in the EU

We are registered in the EU Transparency Register as Chemicals, Health and Environment Monitoring Trust (our full name), with the ID number 27053044762-72.

At the EU level, CHEM Trust participates in a range of meetings, including the High Level Round Table on the Implementation of the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, and the EU Chemicals Agency (ECHA) Endocrine Disrupter Expert Group.

We are an accredited stakeholder at the EU Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and we are an observer at the meetings of the Competent Authorities on REACH and Classification and Labelling. We were also one of the selected stakeholder organisations of the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU), and are a stakeholder in PARC.

CHEM Trust speaks at numerous EU level conferences, organised by the European Commission, commercial conference organisers, NGOs and others. See our talks page for examples.

Working with our EU-based organisations and coalitions

We work with other civil society organisations and coalitions across the EU, including EDC-Free Europe, and the European Environmental Bureau (EEB).

We work closely with other civil society groups working on chemicals policy & REACH, including the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), ChemSec, Zero Waste Europe, Client Earth, BEUC (The European Consumer Organisation), the Food Packaging Forum, the European Trade Union Council (ETUC).

We are on the advisory committee for ChemSec’s “Substitute it Now” (SIN) list, and are members of the Better Regulation Watchdog.

Our global work

CHEM Trust participates in a number of global processes.

We are a participating organisation in the International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN), and have been a member of the OECD Endocrine Disrupter Testing and Assessment Advisory Group (EDTA-AG) since it was created in 2008. We were also a member of its predecessor, the Task Force on Endocrine Disrupters Testing and Assessment (EDTA).

We have submitted documents to the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management process, details here.

Global collaboration

  • We are in regular contact with many US civil society groups who work on chemicals and endocrine disrupters, for example, The Endocrine Disrupter Exchange (TEDX), the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)and the Collaborative on Health and the Environment (CHE).
  • We also work with international civil society groups such as the Centre for International Environmental Law (CIEL), for example in our work on the EU-US trade negotiations (TTIP).
  • We have also provided advice to civil society groups in other countries, for example WWF Australia.
